Ecem Karslı goes by the name '43.44.organism'...
By using different textures and materials, Ecem creates her artwork to represent and challenge the changing forms of nature. The various materials capture the unexpected and contrasting essence of nature, as well as the destruction caused by humans.
Image 1:
This piece captures the process of eutrophication , which is caused by excess nitrogen and phosphorus. These are mainly sourced from fertilisers and burning fossil fuels, which enter lakes through precipitation and lead to algae overgrowth, consequently reducing water quality and creating a low-oxygen dead-zone.
The dead-zone is recreated on the bottom half of the piece, encapsulating the blooming algae. The cool colour palette used captures the loss of life and biodiversity.
Image 2: "Destroyed Village"
Dried up rivers, forest fires, bush fires; all within 2019. The climate emergency is here, and this piece illustrates how the local and indigenous communities are affected by this the fastest and the most.
Image 3:
This piece captures the rapid bleaching of coral reefs, which has already affected 95% of the Great Barrier Reef's northern section. Climate scientists predict we have passed the point of return in recovering from this problem. The white areas are made with concrete, relating this issue back to it's root cause of global industrialisation and increasing production. Brighter colours contrast with the white, representing the liminality between life and death in our ecosystems.
